I qualified as a Clinical Psychologist at the University of Cape Town in 1986, and I work in private practice in Claremont, Cape Town. I work extensively with teenagers, and with adults. I work mainly with individuals, but also see couples and families if this is appropriate. I have a particular interest in working with groups.
I worked for some years in the NHS in the UK, and studied further in psychotherapy through the Tavistock Institute in London (2-year Seminars in Psychotherapy programme) and in group therapy at the Institute of Group Analysis (1-year introductory course in Group Analysis). I am a member of the Cape Town Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Group.
I have facilitated discussions and made presentations at a range of schools on a variety of issues faced by our teenagers today. I offer supervision to fellow clinicians, and particularly to mental health workers who work as counsellors in schools. Through the Wise Counsel programme I facilitate a number of peer supervision groups. A wide range of issues relating to work in schools has been discussed in this forum. From this wide-ranging discussion a set of position papers / points of view / perspectives on a number of these issues are available through the Shrinkrap tab on this page. Hopefully these will offer some insights or starting points to others facing similar issues. Of course, these cannot replace thoughtful and aware responses in any given situation, but hopefully will stimulate thinking: ultimately, this is the intention behind the Wise Counsel programme.
